The Australian “Capital”

Sydney, Australia

Sydney, Australia

From Australia’s most famous and most populous city, Kristie sent me my most beautiful postcard from her country so far, as a surprise. Whenever I hear the name, Sydney, I think about an exchange I once had with a friend:

Him: “Sydney is the capital of Australia, everybody knows that.”

Me: “But those of us excluded from ‘everybody’ know that it’s Canberra.”

Him: “Is Canberra even in Australia? How can it be the capital if it’s not in Australia. I’ve never heard of it.”

Me: “Oh, I thought you said Narnia.”

Ja, I mean, Australia is such a tiny island nation that when one has never heard of a place in Australia, automatically there is no such place. Sydney, that’s situated on the South-East coast of Australia is home to 4.6 million people. This city, founded in 1788, spans 12 144.6 square kilometers. That is one ridiculously large city! I mean, I knew it was big, but that’s just insane! Thank you for a wonderful postcard Kristie!
